Gareth Southgate has a very talented squad at his disposal at the moment, some may go as far as saying one of the best in the world, but are there any Championship stars who deserve a chance on the national stage?

We’ve taken a closer look at three players who could break into the squad.

Kalvin Phillips

The 23-year-old defensive midfielder became a fan favourite last season and with that, gained the interest of many Premier League clubs.

Bournemouth, Norwich City, Aston Villa and even Tottenham Hotspur were all said to be interested in the Leeds-born midfielder. Phillips made it into both the EFL Championship team of the season and PFA Championship team of the season as he helped Leeds to a third-place finish.

After a breakthrough season last year, Phillips has carried on his spectacular form but with Champions League captain Jordan Henderson and promising West Ham midfielder Declan Rice both ahead of him in Southgate’s pecking order, he’ll need to have another great season to get noticed.

Sam Johnstone

The West Brom keeper hasn’t had the best start to the new season but has been pretty much faultless in the last couple of Championship seasons. The 26-year-old had loan spells at Oldham, Scunthorpe, Walsall, Yeovil, Doncaster and Preston before he moved to Aston Villa – where he announced himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the league.

The shot-stopper was then bought from Manchester United by West Brom for an undisclosed fee and put in another good season playing every single minute as the Baggies finished in a play-off spot.

Jarrod Bowen

Hull’s stand out performer last season, helping them push for a play-off spot at one point of the season. At just 22 he has plenty of time to get into the England set up and that would have been much easier if he had moved to the Premier League this summer.

After 22 goals and four assists there were many teams in for him, including Norwich and Southampton.
